It is a peaceful, alcohol-free sanctuary where no child walks alone and no neighbor is forgotten. Drinking Time: Sacred Huts and 100-Year-Old Canaries

Stepping inside the chief's palace feels like entering a living museum hand-built by time itself. Tucked inside is a collection of traditional clay water vessels—known locally as canaries. These are not for music, but for storing pure spring water. Over a hundred years old, these ancient vessels still hold fresh water for the entire community. I drank straight from one. Cold. Fresh. We gathered near the sacred council hut where notables meet with the chief to deliberate on community laws. Nearby, the chief proudly showed us a massive tree planted on the exact day he was born 50 years ago. While walking through the village farmlands, we sampled local crops including a unique tree nut that tastes remarkably like toasted groundnuts. This deep connection to heritage mirrors the cultural preservation we honor during the coast's sacred Ngondo Festival.
