The Ngondo is Cameroon's most sacred cultural festival — a centuries-old celebration of the Sawa coastal people held every year on the banks of the Wouri River in Douala. In December 2024, it was officially inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The spiritual heart of the festival is the sacred immersion ritual: a chosen initiate dives into the Wouri River carrying a vase containing the community's wishes, descending to communicate with the Miengu — water spirits believed to inhabit the river. The initiate resurfaces with a message of guidance for the year ahead, which is then deciphered by Sawa chiefs in a sacred hut and shared with the public.
